Tips for saving at the supermarket

Your supermarket isn’t set up haphazardly. Lots of marketing experts and consumers took part in lots of studies to determine where every single food item should be placed for maximum sales. Even the discount junk bin is placed in a strategic location. In order to get around this, there are a few details you should know.
Shopping the perimeter will save you money
All of your essentials line the perimeter of the store. Take a look at your meat, dairy and vegetables. Notice how they all line the walls? See, the supermarket Powers That Be know the average consumer will shop until her cart is full. The store is set up in hopes of our walking aimlessly up and down the aisle, tossing food into our carts until they’re full. Once that’s done we’ll race through the meat and dairy to complete our lists. By shopping the perimeter first, you’ll fill up the cart with your meats, veggies and dairies and will think twice about loading up your cart with items you don’t need.
Look high and low
The most expensive name brand products are placed at eye level. Most consumers won’t scan the top and bottom shelves for the cheapest items, they’ll grab the items most pleasing to the eyes. Those items, the ones in fancy packaging, are the name brand goods and the most expensive. For the cheap stuff, look high and low.
The exception to this is in aisles that sell kid friendly foods. The most expensive kid friendly cereals, snacks and canned foods are veiwable at a kid’s eye level.
Use common sense when shopping for food. Is that sale item really on sale? And why is that impulse bin practically blocking the checkout lane. Every single item in the supermarket is placed in a strategic location. Don’t let them convince you to spend too much money.
