HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are both successors of DVD and both offer high definition content in similar resolutions and quality. While the new machines will play the standard DVDs you already own, they also play newer hi-def material from discs the same size as standard DVDs. Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD use of a blue-purple laser with a shorter wave length than traditional DVD player lasers. The shorter wavelength means higher recording density and that means higher definition video on the same sized disk. Currently the two formats are not compatible with each other so you have to pick one or the other.
