In addition to the deals we’ll try and offer some insights regarding the pros and cons and tell you about which one might be right for you. If you already have one and want movies, or know which you want to get scroll down for the deals.
HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are both successors of DVD and both offer high definition content in similar resolutions and quality. While the new machines will play the standard DVDs you already own, they also play newer hi-def material from discs the same size as standard DVDs. Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD use of a blue-purple laser with a shorter wave length than traditional DVD player lasers. The shorter wavelength means higher recording density and that means higher definition video on the same sized disk. Currently the two formats are not compatible with each other so you have to pick one or the other.
Why should I pick HD-DVD?
- HD DVD Players generally cost less than Blu-ray players by $100-200.
- HD DVD discs generally cost slightly less than blu-ray.
- HD DVD is backed by Toshiba, Microsoft and Intel.
- A few titles are currently exclusive to HD DVD (Batman Begins, The Ultimate Matrix Collection , Clerks II and some older Warner Bros titles)
- Paramount and Dreamworks just announced plans to drop Blu-Ray in favor of HD DVD exclusivity
- If you already have an Xbox 360 (or want to get one): there is a cheap (currently $179.99) Xbox 360 HD DVD Player add-on that comes with Eight HD DVD Discs Free.
- Some movies are released on “combo” discs which play in both HD-DVD and regular DVD players
- If you want a stand alone player there is great deal to buy the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player with 8 movies for $210.93 + free shipping. (Complete details below.)
Why should I pick Blu-Ray?
- Blu-Ray discs have larger data storage capacity (25 Gb vs 15 GB) and this can mean more extras or soundtracks.
- Blu-Ray is backed by Sony, Panasonic, Apple, Dell.
- Blockbuster has announced that it will be renting only Blu-Ray discs.
- More movie studios support Blu-Ray including: Disney, Sony/MGM, Lionsgate, Pixar, etc.
- If you have been thinking about getting a PlayStation 3 (60GB) (or if you have invested in PS2 games)… The PS3 includes a Blu-Ray player, so it is definitely the choice for you.
- If you already have a Sony Playstation 3 then you already have a Blu-Ray player.
What do we recommend…
- If you are PS gamer go with the PS3 and get the blu-ray.
- If you are an Xbox guy get the external HD-DVD player.
- If you don’t play games the Toshiba HD-DVD player is a great deal and makes a great upgrade to an existing DVD player, while it is not as cheap as a DVD player with 8 free movies it is hard to go too wrong.
- If you think you might like to play some games and you like to rent from blockbuster, the PS3 is a good set up, if you can afford the extra cost.
- If you already have one or pick one today this is a great time to stock up on both HD-DVD or Blu-Ray movies with the buy 2 get 1 free sale.
