Wedding Favors on a Budget

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Wedding favorsWedding favors and decorations can be pricey. However, if you look into some unexpected sources, you can save quite a bit of money! The trick is to find items that can be used for weddings, but aren’t being sold specifically as wedding decorations or favors.

For example, party favors can be used for wedding favors, and often cost less, since they are not specifically part of the wedding industry. Party stores sometimes have wedding themed items, and at other times have items that can be used for weddings, even if they were not intended to be. Gift bags, wrapping paper, streamers, tablecloths, disposable champagne glasses, balloons, and bubbles can all be found at almost any party store. Other items might also be available - shop early to find decorations and favors that match your wedding colors, and get any items that might go with a themed wedding.

Discount stores are another surprising source of cheap wedding favors and decorations. Many discount stores have a small stock of nice items that could be used as wedding favors, such as candies, picture frames, candles, and gift bags. Again, starting early will give you time to find everything you need, even if it’s not all from one store.

Web sites are another good source for discounted wedding decorations and favors. Wedding sites such as Wedding Favors Unlimited and Wedding Things have a section of highly discounted items. General party supply stores such as the Oriental Trading Company also have very cheap items that are great for wedding favors. DealLocker also has discounts and coupons on wedding items.

Look at after-holiday sales to find all sorts of supplies. Valentines Day and Easter are great holidays for chocolate and colored (pink and red or pastel) ribbons, candies, and decorations. Beautiful baskets that were intended for Easter can be used for centerpieces, flower girls, or wedding favors. After-Christmas sales often have white lights that can lend ambiance to a wedding reception. Show up the morning after the holiday for the best selection of discounted items!

Save Money on Gardening

Monday, March 17th, 2008

save-money-gardening.jpgLandscaping, gardening, taking care of your lawn… all of these things are important to the appearance of your home, but the cost adds up! In fact, more money is spent on gardening in the United States than on any other hobby.

  1. Do most of the work yourself. Yard care services are expensive. Hiring the kid down the street to mow your lawn might not cost too much, but try to avoid professional gardening services. Of course, you will have to decide for yourself which tasks you want to do yourself and which you want to pay for, but remember that you will almost always save money by doing the labor yourself.
  2. Adjust your watering schedule. If your sprinklers are automatic, and water the same amount each day, you might be wasting money on water. Adjust watering and water less during rainy weather. It means paying a little more attention to your garden and the weather, but can save you on your water bill. In addition, water in the early morning so that the water isn’t lost through evaporation.
  3. Replace lawns with drought-resistant and native plants. Lawns are common but require considerable upkeep. Putting in native plants - plants that are used to surviving on their own in your area - can save you time and money since you won’t be watering, weeding, mowing, fertilizing, and raking!
  4. Collect your own seeds and cuttings. Instead of buying seeds or plants each year, collect seeds from plants which have gone to seed and store the seeds until the spring. Trade seeds and cuttings with friends and family; you’ll save money each year!
  5. Use available fertilizer. Ask around at stables and chicken farms or use coffee grounds or pine needles as fertilizer or mulch. Composting can also work well!
  6. Go natural with pesticides. Instead of commercial pesticides, try planting garlic or nasturtiums, which help keep many pests out of your garden! Spraying a mixture of liquid soap or garlic and water on plants can also work better than expensive pesticides.
  7. Get creative with flower pots. You don’t need to buy fancy ceramic flowerpots - an old boot can work, or a hollowed out log!
  8. Rent equipment and tools instead of buying them. How often are you actually going to use a posthole digger? A skid-steer loader? Equipment rental stores have many items available for rent at a much cheaper price than it would cost to buy them.

Don’t forget to check Deal Locker for gardening coupons to save even more money on your favorite hobby!

Save Money on Groceries!

Monday, March 10th, 2008

save-money-grocery-shopping.pngWhen gas prices go up, so do food prices. If you’ve noticed your grocery bill going through the roof, try some of these tips.

  • Make a list - and stick to it! The number one tip for saving money on groceries, making a list helps you in a variety of ways. First of all, making a grocery list forces you to think about what you are buying and if you actually need it. In addition, making a list - and sticking to it - will prevent impulse buys!
  • Never shop hungry. While we’re on the subject of impulse buys, do not go to the grocery store while you are hungry! You will be much more susceptible to picking up food that is on display - and is often more expensive - and will tend to buy more food than you actually need. Eat a snack before grocery shopping, and stick to your list!
  • Buy generic or store brand products. Many store brand products are actually made by the same companies that make more expensive brands, so you don’t have much to lose, except for the pretty packaging.
  • Use rebates. Many people tend to buy a certain product because of a rebate and then forget to send the rebate offer in! Avoid this by sending the rebate in as soon as you make the purchase - you will save money and not have to worry about finding receipts later.
  • Organize coupons. First of all, only use coupons for items that you already buy! Buying something that you won’t use does not save you any money! When using coupons, it often helps to organize them by subject and expiration date.
  • Buy in bulk - but don’t go crazy. We’ve all heard the stories of people who go to Costco and buy 200 pounds of rice for a family of two. However, if you don’t go too crazy, buying in bulk is a good way to save money. Bringing a calculator with you to figure out which item is a better deal can save time.
  • Watch sales. When something that you buy regularly is on sale, stock up! Make sure you’re not buying more than you can use before it goes bad, but buy what you can when it is on sale.
  • Check out Deal Locker’s new printable grocery coupons! These coupons can save you tons of money on all sorts of groceries! In addition, we have other grocery coupons, and coupons for groceries on Amazon.

Healthy and Affordable Easter Baskets For Kids

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

kid's easter basketEaster is a fun holiday for kids, who love the Easter baskets and Easter egg hunts. However, their parents might not always feel quite as good about all of the sugar in traditional Easter baskets. Jelly beans, chocolate bunnies, Cadbury Eggs, and other sugary treats can contribute to obesity, high dental bills, and - most importantly for parents - hyperactive children!

So use these ideas to create the best Easter basket for your children.

  • Books. Books can be found for very low prices at garage sales, secondhand stores, and school book orders. Choose books that are relevant to your child’s interests and right for his or her level. If your child isn’t excited about books, create a nightly story time - he or she will quickly learn to love them.
  • Bubbles. Every child loves bubbles and bubble wands, and these can often be found at discount or dollar stores.
  • Art supplies. Crayons, coloring books, art paper, watercolors, markers, construction paper… the list is endless! Anything that will allow children to get creative is fun for them - and again, much of these supplies can be found at discount and dollar stores!
  • Stuffed animals. Small stuffed animals are often inexpensive at drugstores and dollar stores. Plus, they look adorable in Easter baskets.
  • Party favors. Party supply stores often have very inexpensive party favors that can be fun: noisemakers, plastic harmonicas, spider rings - children don’t care if the toys are seasonal, as long as they’re fun to play with.
  • Sidewalk chalk. Although this could technically be considered part of the “art supplies” category - it’s definitely entertaining enough to be singled out. Children love sidewalk chalk. They love creating art that the whole neighborhood can see - and the neighbors love the fact that it washes away in the rain!
  • Other dollar store toys. Cruise through your local dollar or discount store and see what they have specials on. You’re bound to find things that you hadn’t thought of - and they’re guaranteed to be cheap.
  • Raisins and other dried fruit. Fruit is much better for children than candy, but still sweet! If you want to go a little sweeter, get yogurt-covered raisins.
  • Fresh fruit. Many children are surprised that fruit can taste as sweet as candy - try some new fruits to broaden your child’s experience.
  • Trail mix. Go for a trail mix that has things that your child likes. Then put it in a pretty cellophane bag with a bow!
  • Pretzels or Chex Mix. Although not the healthiest snacks you can find, these are better than candy, and fun for kids to eat.
  • Juice boxes. Not too many of these will fit in a basket, but they’re tasty and brightly colored.
  • One chocolate bunny. You’ve got to have one, even if you are going for healthy!

Don’t forget to get pretty baskets, with Easter grass and colorful ribbons or cellophane. In addition, hard boiling, dyeing, and hiding Easter eggs is a fun family project and the eggs make good snacks for later.

Typo Buddy: Find commonly misspelled deals on eBay

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

We are pleased to announce a great new tool for smart shoppers:

Typo Buddy is a tool to help you find commonly misspelled items, listings & words on eBay and Craigslist.

Say you are looking to buy a Louis Vuitton wallet or perhaps an espresso maker. When you search for those things on eBay you’ll normally be in a competitive bid situation. If, however, you can find listings where people have accidentally misspelled the item or made a typo, then nobody else will see the listing and you’ll be the only bidder. That is how you get a great deal on eBay!

7 Christmas Gift ideas that are almost free!

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

Free Christmas GiftsWith Christmas looming, are you realizing that you don’t have enough money for all the gifts you want to get? Don’t worry. Here at Deal Locker, we understand the importance of a budget and have some ideas

  1. Food Gifts. Everybody loves Christmas cookies, Christmas pies, and Christmas breads. Shortbread cookies are a good bet, as is cranberry orange bread, mince pie, and pumpkin pie. Coupons for a home-cooked meal are always appreciated.
  2. Do-it-yourself food. Cookies in a jar is a fun gift - take a Mason jar and add each dry ingredient in a layer. Screw the lid on the jar, and decorate it with fabric and ribbon. Attach the recipe. The layers make it a beautiful gift, and it will be easy for the recipient to make cookies! Another idea is to make bags of apple cider spices.
  3. Use your talents. If you are a knitter or a crocheter, make scarves or hats. If you don’t have time, use the coupon idea again, and tell the recipient that he or she can pick out the yarn and style of what they want.
  4. Recipes. Back on the food theme, collect family recipes - all of those ones on index cards that are lying around in your kitchen collecting dust - and type them up, making a family cookbook. Places like Office Max will “publish” them very nicely for a low price.
  5. Create gift baskets. Some trial size lotions and a few pretty soaps can be put in a basket with some tissue paper or cellophane and tied with a ribbon. It is low cost, but the time and effort put into it makes it a beautiful gift.
  6. Photographs. Take some of those boxes of family photos or print out some photos off the computer, and make them into an album or frame them.
  7. Coupons. Not coupons for a store - these coupons are for your loved ones who could use time or help more than more stuff lying around. Create a book of homemade coupons. Some ideas: a coupon for a night of babysitting, foot massage, a coupon for a specific household chore, or a coupon for an afternoon walk. Sometimes actions are truly better than things.

Of course if you need the other kind of coupons, those to save money when you buy stuff, you can find online coupons codes here. However, these gift ides will cost you little or nothing, but make a big impact on your friends and loved ones!
